Louis Quatorze Victorious

Compiled From Wire Services

Preakness winner Louis Quatorze outfinished Will’s Way in the final yards of the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and prepared to start his reign as the current leader among 3-year-olds.

The victory set up a rematch with Preakness and Belmont Stakes runner-up Skip Away in the Aug. 24 Travers Stakes. Ridden by Pat Day, Louis Quatorze ran 1-1/8 miles in 1:47.26. Longshot Secreto de Estado finished third, 15 lengths back. Belmont winner Editor’s Note ran fourth.

Unleashing a strong run in the deep late stretch, Skip Away, the 3-5 favorite, wore down six rivals to win the Grade 1 $750,000 Haskell Invitational Handicap by a length at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.
