Lawyer: Fragment Gift To Bomb Suspect

Compiled From Wire Services

A fragment of the Centennial Olympic Park bomb was found in the apartment of the hero guard-turned-suspect, but it was given to him as a souvenir by police, his lawyer told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The scrap was found by investigators in the home of Richard Jewell, hailed as the man who spotted the pipe bomb in a knapsack shortly before it exploded and scattered shrapnel and debris into a concert audience early July 27. One woman was killed and 111 people injured.

His lawyer, G. Watson Bryant, told the newspaper, “It was a gift for him from other Olympic guards. It was given to him several days after the tragedy.”
