Yanks Trip Royals As Key Wins Again

Associated Press

American League

Jimmy Key won for the seventh time in nine decisions and Derek Jeter had four hits Monday night as the visiting New York Yankees rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2.

Key (9-8) gave up two runs - one earned - in six innings, struck out three and walked two.

Key came out after his left index finger became irritated. Mariano Rivera pitched two innings and John Wetteland finished for his 38th save in 41 chances.

Wade Boggs had a pinch-single with one out in the seventh and the score 2-2. Jeter singled Boggs to third and Joe Girardi drove in the go-ahead run with a safety squeeze bunt toward first base.

Orioles 13, Indians 10 Cleveland

Chris Hoiles homered and drove in four runs and David Wells (9-10) beat the team he was almost traded to as Baltimore defeated Cleveland.

The Orioles, who saw Cleveland score 11 runs in the eighth against them on Sunday, put up four in the seventh and six in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie.

Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 1 Boston

Tim Wakefield (9-10) pitched a six-hitter for his third complete game and Boston beat Toronto with three unearned runs off Blue Jays ace Juan Guzman.

Wakefield, who struck out eight, retired the first 10 batters and had a two-hit shutout until the seventh inning, when John Olerud hit a solo homer.

Brewers 13, Athletics 3 Oakland, Calif.

Mike Matheny hit a grand slam and four other Brewers homered as Milwaukee outslugged Oakland.

The Brewers scored six times each in the second and seventh innings.

White Sox 15, Rangers 5 Arlington, Texas

Wilson Alvarez won for the 12th time in his last 17 starts and Robin Ventura hit a three-run homer to power Chicago to its victory over Texas.

Lachemann may be out

Marcel Lachemann, whose team blew a 13-game division lead over Seattle last season and has gone into a tailspin again this year, reportedly will be fired as the manager of the California Angels.

KCAL-TV in Los Angeles reported that Lachemann’s dismissal is expected to be announced today.

Lachemann and Angels officials were flying back Monday night from Cooperstown, N.Y., where California had played to a 6-6 tie with the Montreal Expos in the annual Hall of Fame exhibition game.

Lachemann would become the second manager let go this season. The other was his brother, Rene, who was dismissed by the Florida Marlins.
