Weaver Lawyer To Defend Doctor
A Boise lawyer who helped win acquittals for Randy Weaver on all charges connected with the deadly 1992 siege at the white separatist’s Panhandle cabin has joined the defense team for LaVar Withers, the retired Rexburg doctor accused of sexual misconduct.
Chuck Peterson said he made the decision to join Idaho Falls attorney Fred Hoopes on the Withers case because he believes the retired physician is innocent based on evidence not yet made public.
Peterson signed up for the case about a month ago after being personally asked by Withers to defend him against the allegations that he fondled the breasts of a 13-year-old girl during a doctor’s visit in 1994.
It is the only charge brought so far from the more than 100 female patients who have claimed the doctor sexually abused them during his 32 years in practice. And despite problems found by previous investigators, Special Prosecutor Dan Hawkley has said he intends to file additional charges against Withers.
