Rockies’ Ritz Rings Up No. 13

From Wire Reports

National League

Andres Galarraga and Quinton McCracken each homered and drove in three runs to help Kevin Ritz become Colorado’s first 13-game winner Wednesday as the Rockies beat the Florida Marlins 12-5 at Denver.

Ritz (13-7) shook off a shaky start and allowed eight hits in 6-2/3 innings to become the first pitcher in the Rockies’ four-year history to win 13 games in a season.

Giants 9, Reds 2 San Francisco

Barry Bonds hit a grand slam and Mark Gardner pitched San Francisco’s first complete game in more than two months as the Giants ended a seven-game losing streak.

Mets 11, Cubs 7 Chicago

Rey Ordonez cleared the bases with a triple to highlight a five-run ninth inning that rallied New York past Chicago.

Braves 14, Phillies 1 Atlanta

John Smoltz, pitching with a slight fracture of his non-pitching wrist, won his major-league leading 18th game as Atlanta routed Philadelphia in a game shortened to eight innings by rain.

The Phillies made six errors, four by Todd Zeile who tied a major-league record for errors by a first baseman.

Expos 13, Astros 5 Houston

Darrin Fletcher hit a pair of two-run homers and Mark Leiter snapped a personal five-game losing streak as Montreal won its fifth straight.

Cardinals 1, Padres 0 St. Louis

Gary Gaetti homered with one out in the ninth to lift St. Louis to victory.

Pirates 12, Dodgers 2 Pittsburgh

Mark Johnson homered one pitch after Los Angeles starter Ramon Martinez was struck in the face with line drive, and Pittsburgh went on to beat Los Angeles.

Nelson Liriano doubled to start the Pirates’ first and Jeff King hit a liner that struck Martinez.

After laying motionless on the ground for several moments, Martinez slowly got to his feet and stayed in the game. But Johnson hit his next pitch into the center-field seats.

Astros owner: Let’s talk

Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane has asked baseball’s ruling executive council for permission to negotiate a possible sale of the team to Virginia businessman Bill Collins.

McLane is negotiating for a new ballpark in Houston, and talks with Collins would increase his leverage during negotiations for a new stadium in Texas.
