2 Basketball Players Won’t Return To Nic

New North Idaho College men’s basketball coach Hugh Watson felt pretty good about the Cardinals’ returning players and his recruiting class.

However, in the past week Watson has learned forward Gabriel Rapier and guard Darnell McCoy, key contributors last year, are transferring to different schools.

McCoy, a shooting guard, plans to return to his hometown and play at Fresno City College. Rapier is bound for a junior college in Texas.

Behm signs

Kellogg High’s Jeremy Behm, an All-Intermountain League guard, has signed at William Penn, a NCAA Division III school in Iowa.

Behm received an academic scholarship.

Hockey

The Spokane Chiefs have released their 1996-96 Western Hockey League schedule and will open the season at Kelowna on Sept. 20. Their first home game is Sept. 28 against the Tri-City Americans.

The Chiefs will play six exhibition games, including two in Spokane at Eagles Ice-A-Rena - Sept. 1 against Portland and Sept. 8 against Seattle. Both games start at 6 p.m.

Tickets for regular-season games go on sale Sept. 3 at the Chiefs ticket office at the Arena or by calling (509) 328-0450. Tickets are also available at G&B Select-A-Seat outlets or by calling G&B at 1-800-325-SEAT.

Baseball

The Lewis-Clark Twins fought through the consolation bracket to pummel Idaho Falls 16-0 in the Idaho State AA American Legion championship game Wednesday.

The scheduled nine-inning game was shortened to seven inning by the 10-run rule.

L-C (34-27) will open the Northwest Regional a week from today against the Alaska champions at Gillette, Wyo. The regional champion advances to the American Legion World Series, which will be held in Roseburg, Ore.
