Associated Press

American League

Darryl Strawberry hit two more home runs, giving him five in his last three games, to lead the New York Yankees to an 8-4 victory Thursday over the visiting Chicago White Sox.

Strawberry, who hit three homers in a 9-2 win Tuesday night, capped a four-run third inning with a three-run homer off starter Luis Andujar (0-2). He added a solo shot in the fifth, his eighth since joining the Yankees on July 7.

Bob Wickman (4-1), the second of five Yankees pitchers, picked up the win with 2-1/3 innings of one-hit relief. Mariano Rivera earned his third save.

Tino Martinez went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs, and Cecil Fielder added two RBIs for the Yankees.

Darren Lewis homered and drove in three runs for the White Sox.

White Sox first baseman Frank Thomas went 0 for 3 with a walk. Thomas, thrown out of Wednesday night’s game in the eighth by home-plate umpire Brian O’Nora for arguing a called third strike, had to be restrained by teammates in the dugout after striking out in the seventh.

Tigers 3, Rangers 2

Detroit

Tony Clark hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give Omar Olivares (7-7) and Detroit a win over Texas.

With the score tied at 2, Ruben Sierra hit a one-out double off Gil Heredia (2-4) and Bobby Higginson was walked intentionally. Clark followed with a ground single up the middle that scored Sierra easily and gave Detroit its eighth win in 10 games.

Twins 13, Angels 5

Anaheim, Calif.

Rick Aguilera overcame a pair of homers by Jim Edmonds to win his third straight decision, pitching Minnesota past frustrated California.

The Angels have lost four in a row and nine of 10. They are 0-3 since John McNamara took over as interim manager after Marcel Lachemann resigned.

Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 6

Boston

Alex Gonzalez matched career highs with four hits and four RBIs and Woody Williams won his first start of the year to lead Toronto past Boston.

Gonzalez also made two errors at shortstop and got thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.

Orioles 6, Brewers 4

Milwaukee

Eddie Murray moved past Lou Gehrig into sole possession of 15th place on the career homer list and Baltimore completed a three-game sweep of Milwaukee.

Murray’s 15th homer of the year and 494th of his career came off reliever Doug Jones in the sixth and put Baltimore ahead 6-2.

Athletics 2, Royals 1

Kansas City, Mo.

Rookie Don Wengert won his first start since coming off the disabled list as Oakland ended a three-game losing streak with a win over Kansas City.

Wengert and Doug Linton (5-7) were in a scoreless duel until the sixth, when the A’s scored twice.
