Karrie Webb, a rookie who is playing some of the best golf on the LPGA tour, opened with a 7-under-par 65 for a two-stroke lead at the Ping-Welch’s Championship at Canton, Mass.

Webb was one shot off the course record at Blue Hill. Janet Anderson and Vicki Fergon are at 67; 1991 winner Julie Inkster and Danielle Ammaccapane at 68.

Rathdrum’s Tracy Hanson shot a 33 on the back nine to card a 69.

Jim Colbert, tuning up for the start of the First America Classic Senior tournament, did so in style with a 3-under 69 in the second of two days of pro-am competition at Ada, Mich.

Colbert’s round was the fourth-best of the day at the 6,864-yard Egypt Valley Country Club. South Africa’s John Bland shot a 67.

Joellyn Erdmann of Little Chute, Wis., defeated Grace Park of Phoenix on the ninth playoff hole to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Lincoln, Neb.

Defending Champion Kelli Kuehne of McKinney, Texas, defeated Kim O’Connor of Leavenworth, Kan., 4 and 3, to also advance to the semifinal. The other semifinalist are Jenny Lee of Austin, Texas, and Maria Baena of Colombia.
