James Toney defended his WBU light heavyweight title, using a short left hook to the temple of Duran Williams for a ninth-round knockout at Bay St. Louis, Miss. Toney, of Ann Arbor, Mich., outpunched Williams 39-2 in the final round. He improved to 53-2-2 with his 35th knockout. Williams is 16-2-1.

Pete Couture earned his first PBA senior title, defeating Roger Tramp 244-204 in the final game of the Reno (Nev.) Senior Open.

Couture earned PBA Senior Rookie of the Year in 1995 after finishing in the top five four times without winning.

As for the overall standings this year, Spokane’s Jim Frazier is in 18th place with a match-play record of 10-13-1 and has a pinfall total of 9,446.

Award-winning turf writer and sportswriter William W. Leggett died at age 64 in New York after a lengthy illness.

Leggett was a turf writer for 30 years for Sports Illustrated, winning an Eclipse Award in 1979 for excellence in the field.

No further commercial sockeye salmon openings are planned for the Fraser River - at least for now.

From Richmond, British Columbia, the Pacific Salmon Commission’s Fraser River sockeye panel recommended no new commercial openings be considered until the federal Fisheries Department updates its estimates.
