Putters Hold The Key As Anderson Has Lead; Hanson Two Shots Back

Janet Anderson needed two putters to take the second-round lead in the LPGA Ping Welch’s tournament in Canton, Mass.: her own, and Karrie Webb’s.

Webb four-putted the 18th hole to squander a chance for an eagle that would have put her four strokes ahead of the pack. And Anderson, who hasn’t even three-putted so far in the tournament, shot a 70 Friday to move to the top of the leaderboard.

Anderson, who last won in 1982, totaled 137 to make the cut for only the fifth time in 12 tournaments this year. She had a one-stroke lead over Webb, with five tied at 5-under and six more within three strokes of the lead at minus-4.

Rathdrum’s Tracy Hanson is just two shots off the lead with a two-day total 139. She fired a 70.

Tommy Aaron shot a 6-under 66 for a one-stroke lead over Bruce Summerhays and Tom Wargo in the first round of the $850,000 First of America Classic at Ada, Mich.

Defending champion Kelli Kuehne beat qualifying medalist Jenny Lee 3 and 2 to advance to the final of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at Lincoln, Neb.

Kuehne, 19, of McKinney, Texas, will face Colombia’s Marisa Baena in today’s 36-hole championship. Baena, 19, the NCAA winner as a freshman at Arizona, beat Joellyn Erdmann, 21, of Little Chute, Wis., 3 and 2.
