Jet’s Engine Recovered Two More Bodies Also Found

Salvagers brought the second of TWA Flight 800’s four engines to shore Saturday and said they have recovered the remains of two more victims, bringing the total to 198 of the 230 who perished.

The latest remains were retrieved late Friday and Saturday, only days after National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Robert Francis said the chances of finding more bodies was “increasingly unlikely.”

Evidence on an engine - a certain type of dent or flame pattern, for instance - could help determine whether the crash was caused by a bomb, mechanical failure or a missile hit.

Three nets full of smaller debris pieces also were lifted off barges - including what looked like seats from the 747’s cockpit.

Information on the recovery effort was scarce. The NTSB and the FBI held no news briefing Saturday, the first time that has happened since the Paris-bound jet exploded July 17, killing everyone on board.
