Zanardi Outduels Vasser For Pole

Compiled From Wire Services

Alex Zanardi broke the track record in a duel with teammate Jimmy Vasser and won his third pole position of the season in qualifying for the Miller 200 at Lexington, Ohio.

Zanardi’s fastest lap of 122.100 mph came near the end of a 30-minute qualifying session in which the old mark of 121.192 mph was shattered four times - by Zanardi, then by Vasser, then twice more by Zanardi.

It’s the seventh year in a row that the polesitter has posted a record speed for the 13-turn, 2-1/4-mile circuit. Jacques Villeneuve set the record last year on his way to winning the Championship Auto Racing Teams driving title.

Dale Earnhardt won the pole for today’s Bud at the Glen Winston Cup road race at Watkins Glen, N.Y. His fast-lap track qualifying record of 120.733 miles-per-hour broke the record of 120.411 set by Mark Martin last year.

Dorsey Schroeder earned his fourth SCCA Trans-Am victory of the season in the Serengeti Eyewear race at Watkins Glen International.

Schroeder, driving a Ford Mustang fielded by Tom Gloy, started from the outside of the front row and took the lead on the first lap.

Schroeder beat Kendall by 1.493 seconds and averaged 91.07 mph in the race slowed by two full-course caution periods.

Schroeder will also race in today’s Bud at the Glen for the injured Bill Elliott who is still in pain after suffering a broken leg in late April.
