Egg Farm Apologizes For Working Conditions

The owner of an egg farm recently slapped with a multimillion dollar federal fine over worker safety and living conditions took out full-page newspaper ads Sunday to apologize.

“The many retailers that we provide eggs to throughout Maine and New England should not bear the burden nor be penalized by their customers because of our mistakes,” A. Jack DeCoster, the owner of DeCoster Egg Farms, said in what was headlined “A message to the consumers of Maine.”

He took out the ad in newspapers across the state, he said, “to express my apologies to our customers for the controversy they have had to experience”

Last month, the U.S. Department of Labor fined DeCoster $3.6 million while alleging dangerous working conditions and unsanitary living conditions in trailers used by migrant workers at the farm.

The company distributes about 23 million eggs a week, according to DeCoster.
