Wallach Is Grand In Dodgers Return

Tim Wallach, playing his first game with the Dodgers this season after leaving the team as a free agent following 1995, hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to give Los Angeles a 10-5 victory over the host Cincinnati Reds.

Reliever Antonio Osuna (8-4) got four outs for the victory.

Mike Piazza and Eric Karros also each homered for the Dodgers.

Kevin Mitchell hit his first homer since rejoining the Reds following a trade with Boston.

Expos 4, Cubs 3 (10)

Montreal

Moises Alou singled past second baseman Ryne Sandberg in the 10th inning as Montreal edged Chicago.

Mel Rojas (6-4) pitched two innings for the victory.

Astros 10, Phillies 5

Philadelphia

Craig Biggio went 4 for 5 and Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run homer as Houston completed a three-game sweep over Philadelphia.

Biggio scored three runs and drove in two as N.L. West-leading Houston finished off its first sweep at Veterans Stadium since August 1992 with its fourth straight win.

Darryl Kile (10-6) allowed five runs and eight hits over seven-plus innings for his 50th career victory.

Padres 7, Pirates 5

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh second baseman Nelson Liriano’s two errors led to five San Diego runs and the Padres finished off their first four-game sweep of the Pirates.

Tony Gwynn had a pair of run-scoring hits as the N.L. West-leading Padres - the league’s best road club at 34-26 - completed their second four-game road sweep this season.

Winner Sean Bergman (5-7) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning by getting Mike Kingery to ground into a double play.

Cardinals 5, Giants 3

St. Louis

Tom Pagnozzi homered twice and Donovan Osborne (10-8) won for the first time in five starts as St. Louis beat San Francisco.

Pagnozzi, who also had a two-homer game May 17, homered to left with two outs in the fourth inning and snapped a 2-2 tie leading off the seventh with a homer off Allen Watson (7-10).

Mets 5, Marlins 3

Miami

Todd Hundley hit his 36th home run and Carlos Baerga followed with his first National League homer in the sixth inning as New York held off Florida.

Winning pitcher Mark Clark (11-9) allowed five hits in 8-1/3 innings. He struck out seven to win for the first time in his past five starts.

Braves 4, Rockies 1

Atlanta

John Smoltz won his major league-leading 19th game when Ryan Klesko and Javy Lopez hit two-run singles in the eighth inning to give Atlanta a victory over Colorado.

Ellis Burks hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Roger Bailey made it stand up through seven innings before the Braves rallied off Rockies reliever Marvin Freeman.

Clearing the bases

Biggio has reached base safely in 31 straight games. … New York’s Lance Johnson needs 34 hits in the final 43 games of the season to break the club record of 191, set by Felix Millan in 1975. … New York’s Dallas Green has ordered 52 intentional walks, more than any other manager in the major leagues.
