Schuler To Return For Honors By Nic

From Staff And Wire Reports

Former North Idaho College President Barry Schuler will return to the campus for the Saturday dedication of an auditorium in his honor.

The ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the main entrance to the Barry G. Schuler Auditorium in Boswell Hall, where a plaque will be displayed.

A reception for Schuler and his wife, Ruth, will follow. Those wishing to attend are asked to contact the NIC public relations office at 769-3316.

Schuler was president of NIC for 18 years, starting in 1968 at age 36. As NIC’s fourth president, he oversaw the addition of 12 buildings as the school went through a period of dramatic growth. A big fan of the arts, he rarely missed a college-sponsored event in the auditorium.

Schuler left the college in 1986 and was named president of The Williamson Free School in Media, Pa. He recently retired from that job.

NIC’s board of trustees voted in November of 1995 to rename the auditorium in Schuler’s honor. Some students and faculty members protested, citing controversies that occurred during his final years at the school.
