Vandals’ Brennan Can’t Shake Shoulder Woes

University of Idaho junior quarterback Brian Brennan is expected to miss at least four weeks following arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday.

“The best case scenario is that he will be back in four to six weeks,” said Vandal head coach Chris Tormey.

No additional damage was found during the operation. Brennan missed all of spring practice after having surgery last December.

Brennan set an Idaho freshman record by throwing for 1,766 yards and 18 touchdowns in 1994. He started three games last year and threw for 554 yards and five touchdowns.

Senior transfer Ryan Fien is Idaho’s starting quarterback with redshirt freshman Darick Pope of Post Falls listed No. 2. However, Robert Scott, a starting wide receiver, is capable of playing quarterback.

The Vandals will hold their first of two fall preseason scrimmages on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Kibbie Dome. Admission is free.

Lake cruise, upbeat breakfast

University of Idaho administrators and athletic department personnel will be involved in two events upcoming in Coeur d’Alene.

New President Robert Hoover and his wife, Jeanne, and past President Tom Bell and his wife, Judy, will be on board the UI Alumni and Vandal Boosters’ Lake Coeur d’Alene cruise next Wednesday.

Also expected to attend are UI coaches Chris Tormey (football), Kermit Davis (men’s basketball), Tom Hilbert (volleyball) and Julie Holt (women’s basketball), and interim athletic director Kathy Clark.

Boarding will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Information: (208) 667-2588.

Also, President Hoover and Coach Julie Holt will be the featured speakers at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce’s Upbeat Breakfast.

Zimmerman injured

Former Moscow High standout Derek Zimmerman suffered a broken neck during a Boise State football practice Monday.

He underwent successful surgery Monday night but his football playing days might be over, according to the BSU sports information department spokesman.

Zimmerman, a redshirt freshman, was expected to contend for a starting safety position.

High school volleyball

Tryouts for the Lake City High volleyball team will be held Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at the gym. Girls in 9th-12 grades are eligible. Information: (208) 769-0769.

College volleyball

Washington State’s volleyball team enters the 1996-97 season ranked eighth in the USA Today/ American Volleyball Coaches’ Association Top 25 poll.

The poll, released Tuesday, is well represented by the Pacific-10 Conference. Stanford is ranked No. 2. UCLA is listed at No. 6, Southern California is 13th and Arizona State made the list at No. 23.

Hawaii, 31-1 last year, is ranked No. 1 while defending champion Nebraska enters the year at No. 5

Idaho received 10 points in the poll.

The Cougars, receiving 978 points, finished last season with a 22-7 mark and were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the early rounds with a straight-set loss to Oral Roberts. ORU (30-3) enters the season ranked No. 23.

Idaho opens the season Sept. 2 at Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, La.

WSU opens the season Aug. 30-31 hosting the Cougar challenge against Gonzaga, Idaho State, Tulsa and Southern Illinois. The Cougars travel to Stanford Sept. 27 and play host to the Cardinal Oct. 26.

The Vandals travel to WSU Sept. 17.
