Cv’s Hite Takes Interim Post As Volleyball Coach

Following a three-year absence, Bernie Hite is back, temporarily, as Central Valley High School volleyball coach.

He replaces Laurie Henry, an out-of-building coach who resigned to take a teaching and softball coaching position at Ferris High School.

“The problem was, it was so late that if we posted it there was no teaching position to go with it,” said activities coordinator Jay Rydell. “We decided to find someone who would be interim coach for one year and one year only. Bernie agreed to come in and help us out.”

Hite was CV’s volleyball coach from 1983 through the 1992 seasons, finishing second in the Greater Spokane League twice, third twice and fourth once.

He resigned to devote more time to his family while retaining his science teaching position at CV.

“You have to take your hat off to the guy,” said Rydell. “He didn’t have to do this, but wanted to help out. Plus, he’s on staff.”

Lack of available teaching positions when coaching spots come open has been a long-standing problem at CV.

Volleyball, boys and girls soccer, softball and boys tennis and, most recently, boys basketball were filled by out-of-building people.

“Next spring, with a couple of retirees, there will be open teaching positions and hopefully we’ll get someone on staff (to coach volleyball),” said Rydell.

CV Babe Ruth wins league

CV Babe Ruth, a team of 14- and 15-year-olds from the Valley, won the Spokane Youth Sports League with an overall 14-1-1 record.

The team went 10-1-1 during regular season and swept undefeated through the league tournament.

CV Babe Ruth beat NWS 15-5 in which J.R. Elsner went 4-for-5 driving in 3 runs, Matt Richmond was 3-for-4 and Derek Wohlers went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair.

A five-run second inning and sixrun fifth led to a 12-5 win over Shadle Park. Included was Elsner’s basesloaded triple.

It took eight innings to beat North Central 3-2 in the semifinals and a seventh-inning run to win 6-5 over Rogers in the title game.

Tom Hartley doubled and scored on Elsner’s single for the game-winner in the finale.

Hartley had scored on a wild pitch to win the semifinal. Neither run off pitchers Josh Bauch, Richmond or Wohlers was earned.

Wohlers was 2-0 in the tournament and had a save. Richmond compiled a 1.75 ERA. Elsner drove in nine runs and catcher Ty Windhorst threw out 7 of 10 attempted base stealers.

During regular season the team outscored its opposition 161-45. Wohlers led the team with a .552 batting average, Bauch compiled a 6-0 record and 2.68 earned run average. He also had a tournament win.

Windhorst was defensive MVP and centerfielder Isiah Hankel won the hustle award.

Others on the team were Derek DeHaas, Chris Lee, Mike Shull, Lee Simonson and Donny Tomsha.

Players are from East Valley and Mountain View Middle Schools, Greenacres, North Pines, Bowdish and Evergreen Junior Highs.

Coaches are Steve Richmond and Jay Elsner.
