Estrogen-Progestin Pills Good For Heart

Associated Press

Widely prescribed hormone pills that combine estrogen and progestin appear to be just as effective as straight estrogen in preventing heart disease after menopause, a study concludes.

Many women take hormone supplements to ease the hot flashes and other symptoms of the change of life. Some stay on the pills for many years to reduce the risk of heart disease and broken bones.

More than 30 studies have found that estrogen after menopause is good for the heart. However, most of this research involved women who took straight estrogen, which was once the standard treatment.
