Compiled From Wire Services

Buster Mathis Jr. has pulled out of his Aug. 20 fight against Lou Savarese at Madison Square Garden after injuring his neck and jaw in a sparring session.

The injury occurred when Mathis took a punch in the face from his sparring partner Phil Jackson.

Former middleweight champ Michael Nunn faces charges as a result of his arrest following a high-speed chase in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa.

Nunn was charged with reckless driving, attempting to elude police, interference with official acts and no valid license.

Struckman said police pulled Nunn over about 2 a.m. after they saw his 1994 Mercedes cross a highway center line three times.

Rushing leader George Jones and two other star players were declared ineligible for San Diego State’s season opener for violating NCAA rules related to extra benefits, the school said.

Jones, who ranked second nationally in scoring (11.5 points a game) and third in rushing (153.5 yards) last season, will miss the Sept. 7 game against Idaho, as will junior wide receiver Will Blackwell and senior cornerback Ricky Parker.
