Fien, Idaho Offense Steal Show During Two-Hour Scrimmage

The Idaho Vandal offense showed spark in Saturday’s 2-hour outdoor scrimmage in Moscow, Idaho.

Senior quarterback Ryan Fien led the No. 1 offense on three scoring drives. He finished 14 of 23 with no interceptions, 159 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target was junior receiver Antonio Wilson who grabbed four passes for 65 yards.

Sophomore quarterback and receiver Robert Scott also had a big day. He completed all four of his passes for 58 yards and a touchdown and also caught a pair of passes for 28 yards and a score. He caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Fien and scrambled and threw 35 yards for a score to Tom Gamelin.

Sophomore placekicker Troy Scott kicked a pair of 37-yard field goals, but also had one blocked.

Junior running back Joel Thomas was the top ground gainer with 39 yards and a touchdown on five carries.

While coach Chris Tormey doesn’t think his team is ready for the season opener, he does believe it has made some progress.

“Overall I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Tormey. “We were pretty efficient throwing the ball. We’re ahead of where we were a year ago at this time, but I don’t think we would have beaten Wyoming today.”

Fien, a transfer from UCLA, drew praise from both Tormey and Thomas.

“He’s an accurate thrower,” said Tormey. “He’s got a quick release and a strong arm.”

The Vandals will conduct their final scrimmage of the fall Friday morning. Idaho opens the season Aug. 31 at Wyoming.
