G-Prep Baseball Coach Leaves For College Job

Gonzaga Prep baseball coach Pat Shine has resigned to accept a head assistant’s position at San Francisco City College.

Shine, who had an 11-7 record in his only season at G-Prep, taking the Bullpups to a fourth-place finish in the Greater Spokane League last spring, coached the semipro Topeka, Kan., Capitals this summer.

“This is a great opportunity for Pat,” said G-Prep activities coordinator Mike Arte. “He did a great job with our kids.”

Arte said G-Prep, which does not have a teaching position open, is asking interested candidates to send a letter and resume to him at the school, 1224 E. Euclid, Spokane, WA 99207.

Baseball

Eric Sandberg, who will be a junior at Ferris High School, earned the Joel Ferrell Award for outstanding performance in the AAU Junior Olympics 16U Tournament in New Orleans, La., earlier this month.

Playing for the Rainier Baseball Club, Sandberg pitched a 5-0 win over New Jersey and was 8 for 20 at the plate, including two doubles and two home runs. Rainier made the final 16 in the 44-team tournament before being eliminated.

East Cobb, Ga., won the gold medal.

Cheney High School pitcher Doug Clark has signed to play at Northwest Missouri State.

Basketball

The Spokane Blue Devils reached the quarterfinals before losing and won the consolation bracket of the national BCI 13U boys tournament in New Orleans.

During four days of competition, the Blue Devils, coached by Ron Benzel and Darryl Bursch, won eight of nine games.

Team members: Ty Scott, Erik Benzel, Jordan Bursch, Kirby Fike, Andy Bloom, Ryan Simpson, Andrew Ice and Kevin Aronson, all Spokane; Daniel Haines, Lewiston; and Brian Boyer, Lapwai, Idaho.

Ryan Looney of Spokane (Central Valley) will transfer to Eastern Oregon State College from Western Montana, EOSC announced.

Looney, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior guard, averaged 6.0 points and 2.5 assists last season and was a conference all-academic selection.

Football

Late registration is being accepted this week for the second annual Football Family Frenzy, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at Shadle Park.

Special extended registration will be held from 4-8:30 p.m. Friday at Jack’s World of Cards in Franklin Park Mall. Fee is $20. There are 10 divisions, for everyone from 8-year-olds through open adults, including a wheelchair division. Pre-registered teams can also pick up their packets at this time.

Also, from 7-8:30, three former Washington State football players - Jack Thompson, Derek Sparks and Frank Madu will be available to sign autographs.

The Post Falls Junior Tackle Association will hold registration for the upcoming season.

Boys entering seventh and eighth grades can register Thursday and Aug. 27 at the Post Falls Recreation Department. Cost is $70. No late registration will be accepted this year.

Softball

An 18U select fastpitch team, for area girls interested in showcasing their talents for college coaches, is being formed in Spokane for the 1997 season.

Tryouts will be Thursday at 5 p.m. at University High School.

“We encourage girls who are interested in going to college and playing softball to participate,” said Jerry Mertens, who will be the coach. He said the team plans to travel to high-profile tournaments.

Miscellany

There’s a new flagship station for Washington State University football and radio broadcasts.

“The Crimson & Gray Sports Network” will originate on KJR, 950 AM, in Seattle the next five seasons. For the last six years, the broadcasts originated from KIRO.

Bob Robertson will return for his 33rd season as voice of the football Cougars, rejoined, after a two-year absence, by color commentator Paul Sorensen. Bud Nameck is back as basketball voice.

Cougar broadcasts will continue to be carried locally by KXLY-AM 920.
