Poison Ivy Relief

Staff And Wire Reports

Camping

With poison ivy lining many popular waterways in the region, including the Snake, Salmon and Spokane rivers, it’s no comfort to learn that about 80 percent of humans are allergic to pretty, three-leaved vine.

Should you come in contact with the plants, the first aid treatment seeks to remove urushiol, the plant oil that triggers the allergic reaction.

Wash the affected area with plenty of cold water. Do not scrub the rash with hot water and soap. Soap does not dissolve urushiol and can spread the poison while hot water only opens the pores.
