Bledsoe On Target In Win

Associated Press

Drew Bledsoe threw for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the first half as the New England Patriots knocked Philadelphia quarterback Rodney Peete out of the game and beat the visiting Eagles 37-10 Sunday at Foxboro, Mass..

Bledsoe completed 14 of 21 passes, and Curtis Martin ran for 52 of his 56 yards in the first half. Ben Coates caught five passes for 65 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown that made it 14-0 with 40 seconds left in the half.

That’s when the Eagles’ first-string had its best - also perhaps its worst - drive of the day.

Derrick Witherspoon ran the ensuing kickoff to the Philadelphia 48. Peete scrambled for 6 yards, then hit Ricky Watters on consecutive plays to put the ball on the Patriots’ 29 with 10 seconds left in the half.

Peete connected with Chris Jones for 22 yards, but Willie McGinest connected with Peete’s left knee on the play. As Gary Anderson converted the 25-yard field goal to end the half, Peete limped off with a knee sprain.

The Eagles’ quarterback finished 6-for-11 for 48 yards. Jones caught five passes for 117 yards, and Watters ran for 51 on nine carries for Philadelphia.

Jaguars 38, 49ers 10

San Francisco gave up the ball on punt returns, gave up field position on kickoff returns and gave up points with more bad snaps by the field goal unit.

Jacksonville took advantage of just about all of those lapses, then got a nice performance from backup quarterback Rob Johnson for a 38-10 exhibition victory at Jacksonville, Fla.

Johnson scored on a 7-yard run after Dexter Carter’s fumble on a punt return, and was 6 of 7 for 101 yards in 1-1/2 quarters as the Jaguars (1-2) scored their most points ever.

Steve Young, who played the first half, completed 17 of 27 passes for 144 yards and scored on a 4-yard run with 55 seconds left before halftime to give the 49ers (1-2) a tie at 10.

Former Husky quarterback Mark Brunell hit Andre Rison for a 3-yard Jaguars touchdown in the third quarter. Brunell finished 8-for-15 for 95 yards and ran six times for 36 yards.
