Pete Sampras withstood the blazing serves of Goran Ivanisevic to win the RCA Championships in Indianapolis, for a record third time, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

The defeat kept the second-seeded Ivanisevic winless in the United States.

Lindsay Davenport, two weeks after winning the Olympic gold medal, used pinpoint groundstrokes to rout Anke Huber 6-2, 6-3 and capture the Acura Classic in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Alex O’Brien, enjoying the week of his life on the tennis tour, won the Pilot Pen International in New Haven, Conn., completing a run from wild-card entry to first-time champion with a victory over No. 10 seed Jan Siemerink 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 in the finals.
