Brown Beats Cubs For Milestone Win

Kevin Brown lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.90 and got the 100th victory of his career as the Florida Marlins edged the Chicago Cubs 4-3 Monday at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Brown (12-10) gave up four hits in seven innings.

Chicago’s Sammy Sosa hit his 40th homer.

Astros 2, Pirates 1 (13)

Houston

Ramon Morel walked Sean Berry with the bases loaded in the 13th inning, giving Houston a victory over Pittsburgh.

Alvin Morman (2-1) pitched the 13th for Houston, which stranded a team-record 20 runners and also walked a team-record 14 times.

Padres 7, Expos 3

San Diego

Scott Sanders pitched 6 innings of no-hit ball and Ken Caminiti had a grand slam and six RBIs as San Diego beat Montreal.

Darrin Fletcher broke up the no-hitter when he lined a 2-2 pitch to right for a clean single with two outs in the seventh.

Giants 5, Mets 4

San Francisco

Barry Bonds hit a first-inning homer for the third consecutive game and Tom Lampkin hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning, leading San Francisco over New York.

Bernard Gilkey went 4-for-4 for the Mets with three doubles and two RBIs.

Rockies 6, Reds 3

Cincinnati

Larry Walker and Walt Weiss homered as Colorado ended another poor road trip with a victory over Cincinnati.

Clearing the bases

Outfielder Brian McRae of the Chicago Cubs was picked as the National League player of the week. He hit .591 with 13 hits in 22 at-bats last week. … Mitch Williams’ attempt at a comeback ended when the Phillies gave the 31-year-old pitcher his unconditional release. … The Rockies have played 18 of their last 21 games away from Coors Field, going 9-12.
