Ex-County Treasurer Admits Embezzling

Former Bonner County Treasurer Karen Weldon pleaded guilty Monday to grand theft for embezzling about $12,000 of taxpayer money.

Weldon, 46, told a judge she wrote several county checks to herself and put personal expenses on her county credit card, including purchases of Western clothes.

Weldon was charged with grand theft several months ago after county officials discovered some missing funds and questioned her expense reports.

During the investigation Weldon resigned as treasurer, a post she had held for nearly six years.

Weldon will be sentenced in October.
