Harley Yake Spokane

Visitation for Harley M. Yake, 79, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Yake, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

He graduated from North Central High School and received a mechanical engineering degree from Washington State University. He also was a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.

In 1940, he married Virginia Brecken in Dayton, Ohio, where he worked as an aeronautical engineer.

He served in the Navy from 1944 through 1945 and, following World War II, served in the Naval Reserve. He retired in 1969 as a lieutenant commander.

Mr. Yake worked for Worthington Pump and Machinery Co. of Seattle as a sales representative.

In 1950 he returned to Spokane and was an independent equipment manufacturers’ sales representative for industrial engineering companies until 1975.

In 1969 he and his wife, Virginia, purchased the Blueslide Resort on the Pend Oreille River. They operated the resort until 1990.

They then moved to Deer Park, and they recently had moved back to Spokane.

While in Pend Oreille County, he served as county commissioner for eight years.

He was a member of the Deer Park Church of the Nazarene and Gideons International.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Yake; two sons, Robert Yake of Spokane and Larry Yake of Deer Park; two daughters, Deanna Anderson of Spokane and Carolyn Horlacher of Waitsburg, Wash.; a brother, Glen Yake of Spokane; a sister, Judy Hanson of Eugene, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Rose Layton Medimont, Idaho

Service for Rose Mary Layton, 66, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service of Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Layton, who was born in Wardner, Idaho, died Saturday.

She was a lifelong North Idaho resident and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Lee; four sons, Norman Knott Jr. of Virginia, Gary Knott of Montana, Larry Knott of Elk River, Idaho, and Don Knott of Kingston, Idaho; one daughter, Shelley Church of Kingston; one stepson, Gary Layton of Auburn, Wash.; seven brothers, Bus Peterson of Kingston, Bill Peterson of Coeur d’Alene, Walter Peterson of Prichard, Idaho, George Peterson of Kellogg, Ed Peterson of Rose Lake, Idaho, and Chuck and Paul Peterson, both of Wardner; one sister, Violet Pringle of Bellevue, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Smelterville Lions Club.

Harriet ‘Hattie’ Harbour Spokane

Graveside service for Harriet E. “Hattie” Harbour, 89, was Monday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Harbour, a 78-year Spokane resident, died Thursday.

She was born in Wolf Lodge, Idaho.

Mrs. Harbour was a member of St. David’s Episcopal Church and a life memorial member of Spokane Eagles Lodge 2.

Her husband, LeRoy Harbour, died in 1966.

She is survived by two sons, LeRoy and Harry Harbour; two daughters, Joan Rice and Doris Ewing; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons.

Yvonne Boyer Spokane

Service for Yvonne J. Boyer, a 49-year Spokane resident, will be in Grand Rapids, Mich. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Grand Rapids. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Boyer, 77, died Wednesday. She was born in Grand Rapids.

She was a member of the Spokane Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Walter Boyer; and two sisters, Dagmar Streeter of Charlotte, Mich., and Samantha Brown of White Cloud, Mich.

Sharon Buck Sandpoint

Memorial service for Sharon Ann Buck will be at 1 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Sandpoint.

Ms. Buck, 37, died Friday of respiratory trouble related to athsma.

She was born in Sandpoint and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1977.

She had worked since 1979 as a court clerk for Bonner County.

In 1989 Ms. Buck married Paul Vogel in Mexico.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and Beta Sigma Phi. She did volunteer work at the Selkirk School in Sandpoint and was active in environmental organizations, including the Clean Air Coalition.

Ms. Buck is survived by her husband, a daughter, Hannah, and a son, Dylan, all at the home in Sandpoint; her mother, Marilyn Buck of Sandpoint; a brother, Brandon Buck of Sandpoint; three sisters, Geraldine Waggoner of Newport, Wash., Nancy Neely of Boise and Patricia Garlock of Lexington, Ky.; and her grandmother, Marilyn Buck of Sandpoint.

She was preceded in death by her father and a sister.

Josephine Reid St. Maries

Service for Josephine E. Reid, 79, will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Reid, who was born in Colfax, Wash., died Thursday.

She grew up in Colfax and graduated from high school there in 1935. She went on to graduate from Kinman Business School in Spokane in 1937.

Mrs. Reid worked for the Whitman County Abstract Co. before moving to St. Maries in 1942. She then worked for Benewah County Abstract and the Ray A. Bowen Agency before being employed by Reid’s Service Station.

She started employment at the St. Maries Gazette Record in 1958 and was the assistant editor and a feature writer before retiring in 1985.

She was a member of the International P.E.O. Sisterhood, St. Maries Ladies Elks, the St. Joe Valley Boat Club, the Idaho Library Association and the Dirty Nine Bridge Club. She also served on the Benewah County and St. Maries Library boards.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond; and a sister, Vesta Poulac of Olympia.

James Hurtt Sr. Spokane

Service for James V. Hurtt Sr., 58, will be at 10 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Hurtt, who died Friday, was born in Dayton, Ohio.

He was a 14-year Spokane resident.

He had worked as a precision toolmaker for the Boeing Aircraft Co. and retired in 1984.

He was a member of Machinists Union Local 751.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Loraine Hurtt; five daughters, Kimberly Hurtt-Buhrman of Dayton, Ohio, Angela Hurtt-Kalanta of Ceres, Calif., Christine Hurtt-Vega of Modesto, Calif., Laurie Hurtt of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Vickie Hurtt-Thayer of Huber Heights, Mich.; four sons, James Hurtt Jr. of Everett, Jamie Hurtt of Springfield, Ohio, Joseph Hurtt of Spokane and Brian Hurtt of Macomb, Mich.; a brother, Darrell Hurtt of Westland, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren.

Bobby Smith Spokane

Service for Bobby J. Smith, 76, will be at 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Mr. Smith, who died Thursday, was born in Salem, Ore.

He was raised in the Kingston, Idaho, area and graduated from high school in Kingston.

He served in the Army during World War II and received seven medals. including the Bronze Star.

Mr. Smith moved to Spokane in 1946 and worked at Kaiser Aluminum in Mead for more than 32 years. He retired in 1979 as a supervisor.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Alice Smith; a son, Michael Smith; a daughter, Judith McCullough; three brothers, Roy Smith of Palmer, Alaska, Walter Smith of Ocean Park, Wash., and Jerry Smith of Lake Oswego, Ore.; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mary Allard Spokane

Funeral Mass for Mary H. Allard, 75, will be at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements and cremation.

Mrs. Allard, who was born in Raleigh, Mo., died last Tuesday.

She moved to Spokane in 1948, and worked as a seamstress for a drapery-making company. She also taught drapery-making at Spokane Community College in the early 1970s.

She and her husband owned and operated several hotels, motels and apartments, including the Bel-Air Motel and the Holiday Lodge. During Expo ‘74, they opened the Milner Hotel in the former Coeur d’Alene Hotel building in downtown Spokane.

Her husband of 36 years, James Allard, died in 1984.

She is survived by two sons, Rod and Joe Allard, both of Spokane; three sisters, Marjorie Santori of Lompoc, Calif., Pauline Clay of Altus, Okla., and Luocille Wheeler of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Jack Rupe of Hensley, Ark.; and a grandson.

Jean Hearne Spokane

Service for Jean Hearne, 64, was Sunday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Baltimore, Mrs. Hearne died Aug. 12.

She had lived in Spokane for 18 years and was a member of the Southgate Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew Hearne; a son, Tyrone Christian of Baltimore; five daughters, Linda Christian of Washington, D.C., and Roslyn Sydner, Deborah Christian, Rosetta Squire and Myra Squire, all of Baltimore; a brother, William Johnson Jr. of Baltimore; a sister, Helen Brooks of Pleasantville, N.J.; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Laura Bleck Spokane

Memorial service for Laura L. Bleck, 92, is set for 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Bleck, a 47-year Spokane resident, died Friday.

She was born in Knoxville County, Ind.

Mr. Bleck was a member of the Aliesha Garden Club and North Hill Christian Church. She had lived in Spokane for 47 years.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Earl Bleck; a son, Donald Seed of Lawrenceville, Ill.; a sister, Aline Roney of San Antonio, Texas; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frank Dahm Spokane

No service will be held for Frank R. Dahm, 88. Private inurnment will be at the Elk Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dahm died last Tuesday. He was born in Canada and moved to Elk with his family when he was 10. He owned Trent Avenue Fuel for 20 years, and worked in highway construction for Les Peak Paving for 15 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ona of Spokane and Joyce Brown of Missoula; a son, Harold Dahm of Bothell, Wash.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
