Russian Ultranationalist Visits Iraq

Tue., Aug. 20, 1996

Russian ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky began a visit to Iraq on Monday and said he hoped to find ways to lift international sanctions on the Arab nation.

Zhirinovsky told the Iraqi News Agency the sanctions were “an ugly crime being committed against Iraqi people by the United States of America.”

The United Nations imposed sanctions on Iraq following its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

Zhirinovsky came to Iraq at the invitation of President Saddam Hussein.
