Scott’s 7-Under-Par 65 Leads Lewiston Pro-Am

Bob Scott of Liberty Lake left the field in his wake in the Inland Empire PGA Athletic Round Table Pro-Am on Monday at Lewiston Country Club.

Scott fashioned a 7-under-par 65 with sizzling nines of 32 and 33. Only one other pro was within five strokes of him. Paul McCarthy of Lewiston CC had a 33-36-69.

But that just shared honors as the third best score overall. Amateur Monte Best of Wandermere had a 35-33-68 for the second best score and Neil Schneider of Clarkston had a 35-34 to match McCarthy.

There were two-way ties for all the amateur net leads at 67 - Les Mueller of MeadowWood and Scott Stephens, Coeur d’Alene Golf Club, in the 0-8 handicap division; Jack Mitchell, Coeur d’Alene Resort, and Dan Williams, Hayden Lake Country Club, 9-13; and Dick Medley, Twin Lakes Village, and Bob Matthews, Painted Hills, 14-30.

Dave Christenson of Indian Canyon was two shots off the pace with a 2-under-par 70 to lead the Spokane-area challengers after one round in the Pacific Northwest PGA Championship in Tacoma.

Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan and Chris Mitchell, in his last outing out of Sundance, shot 72s. Les Blakley, Spokane Country Club; Michael Rorholm, Manito; and Don Rasmussen, University of Idaho, were at 73.

Don Waller of Kalispell, Mont., and Walt Porterfield, Bend, Ore., share a one-stroke lead at 68.

Bowling

Second-seeded Matt Surina of Spokane knocked off the man for whom the tournament is named to win the Dave Husted Invitational on Sunday in Milwaukie, Ore.

Surina defeated Husted, the pride of Milwaukie, 247-237 to win the $4,000 first-place prize money. Surina, who averaged 235.5 in qualifying to Husted’s 240.5, beat third-seeded Gary Yamasaki of Portland 297-180 to advance to the final match in the stepladder finals.

Craig Tuholski of Washougal, Wash., was fourth and Kevin Croucher of Grants Pass, Ore., fifth, duplicating their qualifying positions.

Greg Thomas of Old Town, Idaho, finished 11th to collect $550.

Gary Mage of Spokane is tied for 90th in the 197-man field after the first round of the PGA Pontiac Senior Open at Century Bowl in Waterford, Mich.

Mage had a first-day pinfall of 1,878.

Dick Weber of St. Louis rolled his first 300 game in four years, and then added a second six games later, as the 66-year-old Hall of Famer took the first-round lead with a 2,173. He averaged 241.44 for nine games.

Weber has a 51-pin lead over Derek Smith, of Hicksville, Ohio.

The second and final round of qualifying is today. Afterward, the field will be trimmed to the top 24 for match play Wednesday and Thursday, with the top five advancing to Thursday night’s stepladder finals. The champion earns $10,000.

Fishing

Planning a fishing trip to Williams Lake to catch all the fish you can boat? Be sure you’re headed to the right Williams Lake.

It’s Williams Lake in Stevens County north of Colville that has had all limits waived because it is due to be treated with rotenone this fall.

Some anglers have mistakenly thought Williams Lake in southwest Spokane County is the one. Not so. The daily catch limit is five trout, with no minimum size, reminds officials of the Department of Fish and Wildlife. It remains open through Sept. 30. Enforcement officers can issue misdemeanor citations for exceeding catch limits.

Williams Lake near Colville is normally a winter-only fishery, open Dec. 1-March 31. But because the DFW will treat the lake in late October, it was opened July 27-Oct. 27 with all catch, size and possession limits waived to allow anglers to take as many fish out as possible before it is treated. It is infested with undesirable fish like carp and stunted bass.
