The Slice Did The Same Folks Immediately Subscribe To The Swell Paper?

We still wonder.

Did people who came here in response to that slogan of a few years ago - “Spokane, you’ll love it here” - decide after coming that they did, in fact, love it here?

Slice answers: Firefighters, ambulance drivers, floral delivery drivers, cab drivers, sanitation workers, property appraisers, pizza drivers, employees of express mail services and lots of others were nominated by readers after we asked who was the absolute best around here at quickly finding street addresses without consulting a map.

A police officer named Dave said his wife Karen, who sometimes rides along with him, can’t be beat.

Mavis Hogan said her truck-driver husband, Gary, has an awesome knowledge of local streets.

Other highly touted addressfinders included Jim Schaffer, Lonni Allie, Jim Paulson, Ray Matteson, Randy Johnson, Sharon Looney, Jewel McClanahan, Roger Smith, Lois Watts and Stephen Rorie.

And Alice Ehrmantrout and Mary Murcar said the Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs’ Jean Kreitz is No. 1.

They even composed a poem about her.

Jean is quite swift When you find yourself adrift.

She doesn’t need a map To tell you where you are at.

The Map in her mind Is the best you can find.

If it is direction we need

We have Jean K. to lead!

Among the blocks nominated by readers as being home to the most out-of-control engine revving were several different stretches of East Carlisle, the part of Wellesley between Assembly and Driscoll, and the 5400 block of North Walnut.

In another matter, a Spokane reader said the worst thing about working at home is dealing with people who think that because he is home he must be available for spurof-the-moment socializing.

Nancy Hartley’s was one of the first answers we received after asking how to get kids to not leave toys outside. “Get a puppy,” she said.

It seems her family’s new dog chewed the head off a Barbie and mauled several other prized toys. The kids quickly stopped leaving stuff out in the yard.

The most passionate response to our query about which condiment makes life worth living came from a woman whose regard for horseradish sauce borders on addiction.

And Colville’s Jeanette Lantz said her brother in Iowa, Ed Gilbert, is the greatest backyard chef. “He’s coming to visit soon,” added Lantz. “Yum yum.”

Today’s Slice question: How did your visitors from out of town react when you tried to explain the concept of grass-burning season?
