Keller Selected To Take Over Sasquatch Baseball Program
Dave Keller, an assistant at Community Colleges of Spokane the last three years, has been promoted to head baseball coach of the Sasquatch.
Keller replaces Hal DeBerry, who resigned after nine years of coaching at CCS to accept an assistant’s position at Portland State.
DeBerry was an assistant at CCS for four years starting in 1987 before being promoted in 1992. In five years as head coach, he compiled a 102-87 record.
Keller, an all-conference shortstop at CCS in 1989-90 before moving on to Gonzaga University, joined DeBerry’s staff in 1994. In 1995, he was head coach of the Edmonds (Wash.) Baseball Association and also the World Sports All-Stars, who toured Australia.
As a player at CCS and GU, he was team captain and earned most-inspirational awards. He led the Pac-10 Conference North Division in home runs at GU in 1995 and graduated this year.
Baseball
The Spokane Heat finished second in the United States Amateur Baseball Association 16U World Series in Fresno, Calif., last week.
The Heat lost 7-4 to Taylorville, Utah, in the championship game. Spokane’s Eric Sandberg won the tourney batting title with a .692 average (18 for 26). He had six home runs and 18 RBIs.
Other members of the Heat, coached by Drew Brooks, Rick Miller andJason Buckenberger are: Adam Hester, Ben Miller, Chris Miller, Josh Sheffield, Ricky Pettit, Taylor West, Parker Brooks, Raymond Ruiz, Brian Munhall, Chet Womach, BJ Garbe, Zach Yarbrough, Jason Cooper, Shawn Warren, Dustin Reichart, Greg Leverich, Kirk Gosch, Cody Owen, Marshall Bratton and George Petticrew.
Spokane will be the site of the 1997 USABA U17 World Series.
Soccer
Glenna Ryan, a 5-foot-1 freshman defender from Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene, earned a spot on the University of Montana women’s team in tryouts.
Ryan transferred to Lake City for her senior year after earning most valuable defensive player honors at Coeur d’Alene High the previous two seasons, but was unable to play soccer after injuring a knee in basketball as a junior.
The Spokane Soccer Club’s U18-B Falcons won their division at the 1996 San Diego Surf Cup earlier this month. The invitational tournament attracted more than 325 teams from the United States, Mexico and Europe.

More than 100 teams are expected for the 15th annual River City Steelers Fall Roundup Tournament Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Mountain View Middle School on Chase Road in the Spokane Valley.
Teams of players from 11 to 19 years old are coming from Oregon, Idaho and Montana, as well as Washington. Championship games will be played from 9 a.m. through 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2.

The Northeastern Washington Soccer Referees Association will conduct its fall rules clinic Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Lewis and Clark High School, 521 W. Fourth.
High school officials and coaches are encouraged to attend. Individuals interested in becoming certified high school officials must have a knowledge of the game, and need to attend.
