Rusty Wallace lived up to his reputation as a shorttrack ace, dominating the Goody’s Headache Powders 500 on the half-mile oval at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn.

Wallace, who has five victories this season and 46 in his Winston Cup career, led 353 of 500 laps on the way to his sixth victory at Bristol and the 20th of his career on tracks shorter than one mile.

Defending series champion Jeff Gordon finished second but was unable to mount a challenge over the final 161 laps.

Spokane’s Chad Little finished 23rd after starting in 38th place.

Canadian Jacques Villeneuve won the pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps, beating out Williams-Renault teammate Damon Hill, the leader in the drivers’ standings, by .406-seconds.

Reigning world champion Michael Schumacher finished third in his Ferrari.

Four-time world auto rally champion Juha Kankkunen of Finland opened his favorite event, the “1000 Lakes Rally” in Jyvaskyla, Finland, by winning the first seven special stages, and leading championship contender Tommi Makinen, also from Finland, by 42 seconds.

The rally started Friday with a special stage in central Jyvaskyla. But a serious accident, in which one spectator was killed, and 27 injured, forced the cancellation of the premier stage.
