Dollar Loses Ground Vs. Yen

The dollar fell against the yen and ended mixed against other currencies Monday after a top Japanese finance official said his country’s recovery is gaining, reviving talk of higher Japanese interest rates.

Foreign-exchange traders also bought yen ahead of Wednesday’s release of an important quarterly business survey in Japan. Any sign of an improved business climate from the so-called Tankan survey could further strengthen the yen.

The Japanese currency’s strength against the mark and other European currencies kept the dollar little changed in other foreign-exchange dealings.
