Morgan Acres Seeking More Volunteer Firefighters

The Morgan Acres Fire Department is one of the smallest volunteer districts in the state.

It’s no surprise that the department is looking for more volunteers.

Officials in the 1.5-square-mile district are looking to add to their staff of 15 volunteers and a full-time chief. The district has 1,700 residents in an area bounded by Francis, Crestline, Lincoln Road and the vicinity of Havana.

“The problem in this day and age is everybody is too busy,” said Duke Phillips, a volunteer and station lieutenant.

He said other fire districts have trouble getting enough volunteers, too.

The district recently handed out 1,500 fliers seeking volunteers and received four inquiries from qualified applicants, he said.

Volunteers must be at least 18, licensed to drive and in good physical condition. They also must live within five minutes of the station at 6606 N. Regal, but they don’t necessarily have to live in the district, which is also known as Spokane County Fire Protection District No. 6.

Applicants need to reserve enough time in their schedules to go through recruit training and weekly training classes, plus be available to respond to emergency calls.
