North Hill Residents Looking For Cops Site

Residents of the North Hill area are still looking for a commercial site to house a new COPS shop.

They’ve been talking about organizing a Community Oriented Police Station since last January.

Now, they are planning to meet on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. to continue the discussion. The meeting will be in the school library at Willard Elementary, 500 W. Longfellow.

Sherri Jarvis-Lowe, a member of the North Hill COPS executive committee, said the acquisition of a suitable commercial site is the biggest obstacle facing the effort.

“We are still searching for a building,” she said.

It’s been some time since the group met to talk about plans, but with summer coming to an end, Jarvis-Lowe said organizers want to push ahead.

“I want people to know we are alive and well,” she said.

The North Hill COPS shop would serve an area bounded by Francis, Division, Cora and Ash.

The organizers include about 25 volunteers so far, but they are looking for more people to help. Jobs will include neighborhood observation patrols, staffing the future station, tagging abandoned vehicles and reporting graffiti.

Prospective volunteers should call the Spokane Police Department COPS office at 625-3300. Officer Sue Mann has been assigned to the North Hill neighborhood, Jarvis-Lowe said.
