U.S., Haiti Talk As Civil Strife Continues

Two top U.S. officials held high-level talks in Haiti on Friday amid a wave of violence that Haitian leaders say is a campaign to destabilize the country’s democracy.

The U.S. Embassy and Haitian government declined comment on the content of the talks between Haitian officials, Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott and White House national security adviser Anthony Lake.

Their two-hour visit comes in the midst of attacks and killings that President Rene Preval blames in part on demobilized soldiers trying to undercut the struggling democratic government.
