Ecu Rides Harley Past N.C. State

Associated Press

Scott Harley rushed for 351 yards and scored three touchdowns as East Carolina celebrated the resumption of its series with North Carolina State with a 50-29 victory Saturday at Charlotte, N.C.

Harley carried 42 times and scored on runs of 75, 60 and 3 yards. The sophomore fullback broke his own school single-game record of 291 yards rushing, set earlier this year against South Carolina. Harley wound up with 1,745 yards this season, also a school record.

The Pirates concluded their schedule with an 8-3 mark but are unlikely to receive a bowl bid.

(9) Tennessee 14, Vanderbilt 7: At Nashville, Tenn., Jay Graham scored a touchdown and rushed for 99 yards and linebacker Tyrone Hines returned a fumble 61 yards for a touchdown as the Volunteers held off the Commodores.

Vanderbilt (2-9, 0-8 Southeastern Conference) pulled within 14-7 27 seconds into the fourth quarter and had several chances to tie the game. But Tennessee (9-2, 7-1) intercepted two passes and ended Vandy’s final drive with two sacks.

(23) Miami 38, (16) Syracuse 31: At Syracuse, N.Y., Ryan Clement threw for three touchdowns and Tremain Mack scored on a 95-yard kickoff return in the first half as the Hurricanes knocked the Orangemen out of a major bowl game.

The victory gave the Hurricanes (8-3, 6-1 Big East) a share of the league title with Syracuse (8-3, 6-1) and Virginia Tech. The Hokies likely will go to either the Fiesta Bowl or Orange Bowl instead of Syracuse, which has never won a Big East championship outright.

Syracuse, outscored 69-0 by Miami in the second half of the last three meetings, stormed back from a 28-10 halftime deficit. Donovan McNabb, ineffective in the first half (3 for 9 for 38 yards), combined with Darryl Daniel on a 70-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter. He hit Kevin Johnson with a 15-yard scoring pass with 9:55 left to make it 35-24.

Trailing 38-24, McNabb hit Daniel with a 5-yard scoring pass with 54 seconds left, but Miami recovered the onside kick.

Georgia 19, Georgia Tech 10: At Athens, Ga., Mike Bobo threw a 47-yard scoring pass to Juan Daniels and the Georgia defense didn’t allow a touchdown as the Bulldogs (5-6) defeated the Yellow Jackets (5-6) for the sixth consecutive time.

Mississippi St. 17, Mississippi 0: At Oxford, Miss., Eric Brown and Kevin Sluder returned turnovers for touchdowns and the defense also added a safety as the Bulldogs (5-6) defeated the Rebels (5-6) to win the Golden Egg Trophy for the third time in four years.

Pittsburgh 24, Rutgers 9: At Pittsburgh, Johnny Majors went out a winner in the final game of his 29-year career as Dwayne Schulters’ two second-quarter touchdown runs led the Panthers (4-7, 3-4 Big East) over the Scarlet Knights (2-9, 1-6) in front of only a few thousand spectators.

Southern U. 17, Grambling St. 12: At New Orleans, Marcus Jacoby and Steve Wofford each threw touchdown passes in the second half to rally the Jaguars (7-4) past the Tigers (3-8) in their annual Bayou Classic game.
