Standoff Ends With 6 Children Safe

Compiled From Wire Services

A man who barricaded himself inside a home with six children surrendered Saturday nearly eight hours after he wounded a police officer responding to a domestic dispute.

The gunman’s girlfriend, who was shot in the thigh, jumped out a window.

Police did not release the name of the gunman or the girlfriend, who was shot in the leg. Officer Fred Saffold was shot in the foot during an exchange of gunfire with the man, the police chief said.

During the standoff, one child was released, then four more children and a dog. The last child - a 7-year-old boy - stayed with his father and left the house shortly before the standoff was over.
