Burglary Victim Reports Cannabis Caper

Harlan Collinsworth returned from a walk last weekend to find his house out of joint.

Someone had burglarized the 20-year-old’s Coeur d’Alene home. He’d been ripped off.

So Collinsworth called police to report three items stolen: a VCR, a bong and a film cannister stuffed with marijuana.

It was a half-baked idea at best.

“It’s a pretty unusual occurrence when this type of crime gets reported,” said Coeur d’Alene Police Capt. Carl Bergh. “We don’t generally get lots of calls about stolen controlled substances.”

According to police reports, the incident took place about 11:30 p.m. Friday as follows:

Collinsworth told police he’d just smoked $5 worth of weed from a $20 bag he’d bought earlier in the day. Then he walked to the store to buy a beer - despite being too young to buy alcohol.

He left the door to his Sixth Street home unlocked. When he returned, his black Sanyo, four-head, high-fidelity VCR was gone, as was his $80 2-foot, red, white and blue ceramic bong. The marijuana was missing from his basement bedroom.

An angry Collinsworth called police.

When Officer S.W. Childers arrived, Collinsworth showed him a metal container where he’d stored the cannister of dope.

“While showing me this container he (Collinsworth) explained that the suspect had failed to take his marijuana pipe,” Childers wrote in his report. “When I asked where it was, Harlan pulled it from the container.”

Collinsworth was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.
