Lucinschi Elected President Of Moldova
Petru Lucinschi, the republic’s top Communist official in Soviet times, captured the presidency by easily defeating the incumbent in a runoff, according to election results Monday.
After his victory in Sunday’s election was announced, Lucinschi pledged to pursue neutrality, work for peace in a breakaway region and improve relations with Russia.
Lucinschi, the speaker of parliament, had campaigned on pledges to reverse Moldova’s economic decline.
Preliminary results released Monday by the Central Election Commission showed that he topped incumbent Mircea Snegur, 54 percent to 46 percent.
