Stiles Sends Pilots Into Soccer Semis

Associated Press

Kim Stiles, a sophomore from Mead High School, scored the winning goal in the 57th minute Sunday to lead the No. 3 Portland Pilots past Nebraska 1-0 and into the Final Four of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer playoffs.

Portland (19-0-2) meets No. 1 Notre Dame (23-1-0) in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Santa Clara. No. 5 Nebraska finished 23-1-0.

The Cornhuskers, in postseason play for the first time, controlled the pace early, but it was 0-0 at halftime.

The winner came as Portland’s Regina Holan beat a pair of Nebraska defenders on the left flank and crossed a line-drive pass to Stiles, who finished from 6 yards past Husker keeper Becky Hornbacher.

Portland outshot Nebraska 13-8 and held the Huskers to three shots on goal in the second half.
