Man Jumps From Back Of Truck, Gets Run Over By Car

A Spokane man received critical injuries after he jumped out of a truck on the North Side and was run over by a car.

David J. Bassford, 22, was injured about 10:30 p.m. Sunday near Nevada and Courtland.

Police said Bassford jumped into the back of a passing pickup truck near Nevada and Empire and demanded a ride to Bridgeport Avenue.

He apparently jumped out of the truck at Courtland, fell into the road and was run over by a car, police said. The car that hit him sped off and police were searching for it.

Bassford was taken by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition on Tuesday.

Shots fired by prowler

A fleeing car prowler fired a gun at two people who tried to catch him last week, police said.

No one was hit and the thief got away.

The Nov. 28 incident began about 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the North Division Cinema, 7300 N. Division.

A man and woman in their 20s told police they left the theater and were walking to their car when they saw someone inside it.

When the thief spotted them, he jumped into a red Toyota pickup idling nearby and drove off.

The couple told police they gave chase in their own car, but stopped after the man fired a handgun at them.

The woman said her handbag - which contained her checkbook and credit cards - was stolen as was a purple-and-black duffel bag full of clothes.

Police investigating the incident found another car in the theater parking lot that had been broken into.

The thief was described as being in his late 20s, with dark hair and a “scraggly” beard and mustache. He was wearing a dark jacket. The victims said the getaway car was a late 1980s model Toyota with an unusual logo on the tailgate.
