Spokanites Hawkins, Davis Shine

Defending champion Isaac Hawkins took fourth place Saturday at the Foot Locker West Regional cross country race at Fresno, Calif.

Hawkins, a senior at Ferris High and two-time State AAA champ, finished the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 17 seconds. Ahead of him were senior Ryan Andrus, Orem, Utah, 15:00; senior Rhy Reynolds, Newport, Ore., 15:12; and David Lopez, Glendale, Calif., 15:16.

Andrus, who runs for national power Mountain View, took the lead with 1 mile left.

The top eight advance to Saturday’s national meet at San Diego. No other Washington boys advanced.

Senior Kristen Gordon of Alamo, Calif., won the girls race in 17:01, 7 seconds ahead of freshman Abby Miller of Henderson, Nev. Two-time defending champ Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa, Calif., fell back to third after running the first two miles at a record pace.

State AA champ Ann Ramsey of Lakeside (Seattle) placed eighth to qualify for nationals.

The University of Oregon’s Matt Davis, representing Nike, finished 32nd at the USAT&F championships at Stanford, Calif.

Davis’ time of 30 minutes, 7 seconds on the 10.03-kilometer course was the second-fastest by a collegian. Davis, fifth at the recent NCAA championships, was slowed at the mile mark when some runners slipped and fell on the soggy turf.

Davis won three State AAA titles at Mead High.

Reuben Reina of Foot Locker Athletic Club won in 29:06.
