Another Bowden Hired

Tommy Bowden became the third member of the family to take over a major-college football program when he was hired as coach at Tulane.

Bowden joins his father, Bobby Bowden, the longtime coach at Florida State, and younger brother, Terry, the coach at Auburn, who had employed Tommy as offensive coordinator.

Tulane is the first head job for Tommy Bowden, 42. He has been an assistant for 19 years at seven schools.

Navy football coach Charlie Weatherbie, who led the Midshipmen to an 8-3 record this season and their first bowl bid since 1981, has decided to stay at the academy.

The 41-year-old coach went to Waco, Texas, to talk with Baylor officials regarding their vacant head coaching job. He was also considered for the Boston College job.

The official announcement on the hiring of Mike Riley as new Oregon State head football coach has been put off until later this week, an athletic department spokesman said.

The Heisman Trophy is down to its final four. And the contenders are Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, Iowa State running back Troy Davis, Ohio State offensive lineman Orlando Pace and Arizona State quarterback Jake Plummer.

Joe Hollis, offensive coordinator for Rose Bowl-bound Ohio State, will be hired today as coach at Arkansas State, according to athletic director Barry Dowd.

Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews was named winner of the first Broyles Award honoring college football’s top assistant coach.
