Brass Band’s Festive Sound Heralds Season

William Berry Correspondent

The Spokane British Brass Band will ring Christmas in on brass with performances the next two Sundays. Director Michael Warner will lead the ensemble through a variety of festive tunes in anticipation of Santa’s arrival.

The band will perform in Whitworth College’s Music Building on Sunday and at Ferris High School on Dec. 22.

The concerts will include a salute to the employees of Washington Water Power and Inland Power for their work during the ice storm. For this tribute, David and Cathi Moyer will sing a reworking of the song “Wichita Lineman.” The Moyers also will be crooning other holiday favorites.

The band will perform Leroy Anderson’s quintessential medley of carols, “Christmas Festival,” the Farrandole from Bizet’s Arlesienne Suite as well as Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” In addition, the band’s announcer, Jim Brown, will give a musical reading of “The Night Before Christmas.”

Soloists will include tubist David Johnstone in a rendition of “Frosty the Snowman” and a pair of euphonium players performing Schubert’s “Ave Maria” arranged by Jim Baker. Leon Vostrez will play the mellifluous instrument for the Whitworth concert, and Kit Cutler will get the spotlight at Ferris.

Both concerts begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission or $5 for students and seniors, available at the door and at G&B Select-a-Seat outlets or call (800) 325-SEAT.
