Kramer: Bsu Job ‘Pure Fantasy’

Eastern Washington football coach Mike Kramer might be a lot of things, but stuck on himself isn’t one of them.

Kramer made that apparent Friday when he confirmed that he has, indeed, applied for the vacant head coaching job at Boise State, but is only dreaming about being considered.

“It’s just a pure fantasy that I could even get an interview,” Kramer said after returning a phone call from the West Side of the state where he is recruiting. “I was just kind of blowing in the wind (with the application letter and resume) and hoping I can get some blow back. I’ll be doing backflips forever if they’re interested. I think that’s an end-all job.”

The Boise Statesman reported Thursday that Kramer was one of several candidates expected to apply for the Broncos’ job, which became vacant when Pokey Allen stepped down earlier this week due to a recurrence of cancer.

Kramer said he faxed his application material to BSU athletic director Gene Bleymaier late Wednesday afternoon, as directed by Bleymaier’s secretary.

“She said they were going to move on it right away and that he (Bleymaier) would get back to me,” Kramer explained. “I’m still waiting for him to get back to me.”

Kramer, 42, is 13-20 at Eastern, but led the Eagles to a surprising 6-5 finish this fall. Eighteen players who started at least two games return next season.

“The worst thing that could come out of this experience is I get 18 starters back on a good football team next fall,” Kramer said. “Those 18 guys aren’t going anywhere, and it’s not like they’re going to be disgruntled just because I applied for another job.

“They’re going to line up and play, so what the heck?”

Kramer admitted he is serious about the job, however, saying he has “called in all his debts” in asking several friends to call Bleymaier with a recommendation.

“It’s a brilliant job. There are haves and have-nots, and Boise State is definitely a have.”
