Nfl Matchups

Terry Bannon, Chicago Tribune

Chargers at Bears

Line: Bears by 3.

Last meeting: Bears won 16-13 at San Diego on Nov. 14, 1993.

Key stats: Bears have scored first in their last six games.

Worth watching: Bears must contain Chargers WR Tony Martin, who leads the NFL with 14 touchdown receptions. Bears RB Rashaan Salaam, who rushed for 115 yards in last week’s victory over Rams, seems to warm up in December.

Outlook: Chargers QB Stan Humphries returns after missing a game with a concussion, but must do more than find Martin to keep Chargers in playoff race. He’s facing Bears’ 13th-ranked defense, which has held six of last seven opponents to 17 or fewer points (Green Bay beat Bears 28-17).

Eagles at NY Jets

Line: Eagles by 7.

Last meeting: Eagles won 35-30 at New York on Oct. 3, 1993.

Key stats: Eagles have allowed 21 or more points in five of last six games.

Worth watching: Philadelphia RB Ricky Watters leads NFC with 1,654 yards from scrimmage (1,237 rushing, 417 receiving). Jets plan to go rest of season with QB Glenn Foley, who was 22 of 45 for 227 yards with one TD and two INTs in his first start, last week’s loss to New England.

Outlook: Eagles are stumbling home. But Jets, who have scored 10 points in each of last three games, will make them well. Eagles can clinch playoff spot with victory and Washington loss.
