Ducks Begin Slowly Before Beating Zags
College women
Unbeaten Oregon ventured out of McArthur Court for the first time this season and found the road a bit bumpy.
Still, the Ducks (5-0) absorbed enough early shocks to wear down stubborn Gonzaga 52-33 in the first game of a Martin Centre doubleheader that featured a men’s nightcap between University of Montana and GU.
The Bulldog women jumped ahead of heavily favored Oregon 10-5 and were still within eight points late in the game. But GU, after failing to convert a fast-break opportunity that could have sliced the deficit to 39-33 with just more than 8 minutes left, scored only four more points the rest of the way. The Bulldogs lost for the seventh time in eight games.
Oregon, picked in a preseason media poll to finish second in the Pacific-10 Conference, received 16 points from senior center Renae Fegent and 15 from senior forward Arianne Boyer.
Lydia Ledgerwood scored a team-high 10 points for Gonzaga, which shot only 29.5 percent (13 of 44) from the field.

Whitworth 64, Concordia 49
Whitworth’s women hope to match the men’s success when they face Western Washington in today’s Whitworth Invitational title game.
The Pirates (4-2) played stifling defense in the first half Saturday evening and built a cushion large enough to withstand a late Concordia charge, defeating the Cavaliers 64-49 at the Whitworth fieldhouse.
Today at 4 p.m., they’ll face Western Washington (3-1), a 63-44 winner over Carroll College. Concordia (1-9) meets Carroll (5-7) in the 2 p.m. consolation contest.
Whitworth defeated Carroll to win the men’s title later Saturday night.
The Pirates led Concordia 32-13 at halftime as the Cavaliers made only 5 of 23 shots and committed 14 turnovers. Whitworth eventually built its lead to 23 points, holding Concordia scoreless for more than 5 minutes into the second half.
In the earlier women’s contest, Western led Carroll by one at halftime but scored 39 second-half points. Five Vikings had eight or more points, led by Celeste Hill with 11.
