Frat, Member Indicted For Injuring Pledge With ‘Wedgie’

Associated Press

One member of a suspended Texas A&M University fraternity and the fraternity itself has been criminally charged with hazing after a pledge lost a testicle because of a “wedgie.”

The victim, whose name was not released, was lifted off his feet by the waistband of his underwear on Oct. 14 at a ranch north of the university.

A grand jury indicted the Kappa Alpha fraternity and Jonathan Culpepper on charges of organizational hazing and individual hazing on Thursday, prosecutor Linda Stutt said. The individual hazing charge carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

The organization can also be fined up to $10,000 or more depending on the extent of the injury.

There was no answer at Culpepper’s home Saturday.

Last month, the university suspended the Kappa Alpha chapter until August 1999.

In addition to the criminal charges, 32 students face university disciplinary proceedings, said Ann Goodman, assistant director of student life at Texas A&M.
