Lewis’ Clutch Play Gives Ewu Road Win

Men’s basketball

Kevin Lewis hit a hook shot and two free throws in the final minute to lead Eastern Washington to a non-conference victory over Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas.

Lewis’ free throws came with 13 seconds remaining. The basket was Lewis’ only one of the game and he was 5 for 12 from the line before knocking down the game-winners.

With the win the Eagles (4-3) have already surpassed last season’s victory total.

“It was a super win for us,” stated EWU coach Steve Aggers. “We bounced back well from the Washington State loss.

“I don’t know if everybody understands how good it is to win on the road in Division I basketball, but this is a good win for our program. Defensively, we stepped it up in the second half and we played real hard the entire game.”

The Eagles held Sam Houston (1-5) to just 36-percent shooting in the second half. Karim Scott topped EWU with 13 points.

David Amaya scored 14 points for the hosts.
